More People Conduct Business Online with the Government Than Trade Stocks Online

Great Falls, Virginia, January 15, 2002 - In the past year, more U.S. adults have conducted business online with local, state or federal governments than have traded stocks online. This is based on the National Technology Readiness Survey conducted by Rockbridge Associates, Inc. and co-sponsored by the University of Maryland Center for e-Service. Results of the study reveal that 55 percent of adult Internet users logged on to some type of government Web site in the last year, with 50 percent of users visiting a state or local government site and 33 percent visiting a federal government Web site. In addition, the study shows that 21 percent of adult Internet users had actually conducted business with a government entity online, a higher percentage of users than had conducted bank transactions online (20%), paid a credit card bill online (15%), or traded stocks online (10%).
